January 22, 2009:
USERL investigators, volunteers and foster farms assisted Isle of Wight officials in Virginia in the removal of 25 horses in a case of gross neglect.  
February 4, 2009 - Ten emaciated horses were seized last night from a location near Prospect, Virginia after a concerned citizen reported seeing a dead horse on the property.

33 Horses seized in cruelty case in Virginia

July 28, 2010:

10 horses seized from a farm in Charles City County, VA.
Update: October 6, 2010
A Hanover County woman, Karyn Hale, was convicted yesterday on eleven counts of animal cruelty in Hanover County Circuit Court after appealing her original conviction in General District Court on May 17, 2010.

Owners of 13 horses and ponies charged with animal cruelty
February 10, 2011:
USERL was contacted by an owner, as well as the veterinarian, about a miniature horse in need.  The owner could not provide adequate veterinary care for a wire fence injury that had occurred last summer.  He was in great pain and non-weight bearing on the injured leg.

July 27, 2011:
The NC Triad Region took in a mare and foal from a Virginia cruelty investigation this past Monday.  The mare, sadly, went down and could not be saved.  She was emaciated, with nasal discharge, fever and little milk.  Her foal, now an orphan, was transported to the Triangle Region rehab farm to continue her rehab.  The two month old filly, "Stori", is very thin.

December 16, 2010:
NC Randolph County Animal Control Services seized 3 horses December 2nd, following months of investigation and education, from a Sophia NC resident, Martha Montgomery. The horses were in poor weight condition, having deteriorated over the past several months.

Fox 8 News Story
April 14, 2011: 
A stray pony was accepted into the program from Johnston County Animal Services.  She was found loose Sunday, and is very thin.  The little mare is shy, but sweet and appears to have a chronic skin condition.  She is currently in quarantine and doing very well thus far.
