County Animal Control and Law Enforcement Personnel Learn the Principles of Equine Cruelty Investigation
On August 12-14th of 2010, USERL's annual Equine Cruelty Course was held in Raleigh to instruct those on the front lines the principles needed to investigate equine cruelty and neglect. The full class consisted of ten North Carolina County's Animal Control and Law Enforcement personnel, along with representatives from the veterinary medical field, rescue organizations and an officer from out of state (New Hampshire).
Although the class limit is 15 students (to enable adequate hands-on time during horse labs), 20 students were allowed in the course due to high demand for appropriate and practical equine investigation field techniques. Students attended lectures on Equine Nutrition Principles, common equine neglect health problems, vital signs, aging techniques, horse identification, anatomy, body condition scoring and more. Afternoon labs enabled students to work hands-on with horses applying many of these techniques, as well as trainer demos to better understand equine behavior and how to safely and successfully work with horses no matter their current equine experience.
USERL would like to thank our guest speakers, all of which donate their time to teach at this course:
Carolyn Greene, RVT: NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine
Lawson Ralston: NCSU Equine Educational Unit Manager/Trainer
Samantha Hartford: NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Education Outreach
Dave Lohrey: DL Training Center
Callie Gerber: Gerber Animal Law Center, Attorney at Law
As well as our USERL - Triangle Region volunteers for their assistance!
And Thank you to the NCSU - College of Veterinary Medicine and NCSU - Equine Educational Unit for the use of their wonderful facilities!
