Focus, a 6 year old Thoroughbred, who was rescued in Indiana three years ago from a failed racing career, was severely injured during a storm May 11th while at a foster farm in Laurinburg, NC. The storm produced straight line winds gusting in excess of 125 miles an hour that ripped the roof off the barn, damaged the house and fencing of the foster, flipped the horse trailer and ripped out trees.

The foster family, thankfully, survived without physical harm, but the same can not be said for Focus, who sustained a large open wound that stretched from his sternum almost to his back leg. It took the veterinarian almost 9 hours to clean and stitch the wound back together. While it is unknown what caused the injury, the possibilities are endless as Focus was found two paddocks over from where he was at the start of the storm.

Focus now has a very long road to recovery ahead of him and he needs your help! His medical bills will continue to mount and any donation towards his care is greatly appreciated. Please help this former racehorse to win the race of his life – that to survive!

USERL wishes to extend sympathy to the foster family, and others in the area, that were struck by this storm.  Many prayers are with the family.

USERL also wishes to thank  Dr. Kellam of St. Andrews Presbyterian College for her quick response and wonderful care of Focus!
USERL Foster Farm in Laurinburg, NC hit by severe storm.  USERL horse needs your help!
May 15, 2009:  Focus is being housed at the equine facilities at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC where attending veterinarian can monitor his care.
Focus (pictured here in 2008) was adopted quickly when he arrived in NC, but had recently returned to the USERL program due to family hardship.  He had been placed in a foster home while available for adoption into a new home, but will now be in the USERL rehab program until he is healed.

Focus is now at a foster farm and recovering very well.  He should make a full recovery thanks to his many, many supporters through this ordeal.  His caregivers have done a phenominal job caring for him daily and the results are a full life ahead for Focus!

January 2010:
Many have awaited for pictures of Focus, the OTTB USERL horse that was severely injured during a freak storm at a foster farm in Laurinburg, NC this past May.  Focus is fully recovered with only a small amount of healing to go on his abdomen from the large open gash that resulted, most likely, from building/fence debris.  He has since been adopted by Jennifer Bruner, a USERL volunteer that tirelessly assisted in his care daily and raised much of the funds needed to cover his very large veterinary bill.  Her efforts and those of the community, gave Focus another "second chance" to have a full life.  It is with gratitude that USERL show everyone what a difference they made to a very special horse:

USERL wishes to, again, thank the individuals and businesses that donated to the Focus Fund, and to Dr. Keller for her meticulous and loving care of Focus.

A local newspaper who has been following Focu's story wrote an update on his recovery.  Read it now!
