United States Equine Rescue League, Inc. Receives $15,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities® to Assist with Equine Dental Expenses for USERL Horses

From Corporate Headquarters: Raleigh, NC - February 18, 2010:
The United States Equine Rescue League, Inc. received a $15,000 grant this past December to cover equine dental expenses for horses in the USERL Horse Program. The Horse Program shelters neglected/abused horses from animal cruelty cases in North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky.
This program houses and rehabilitates neglected horses, donkeys and mules through a large community foster network and readies them for adoption into new homes. Program expenses include veterinary care, feed, hay, bedding and farrier care.
With the economical woes of the past two years, USERL has seen a significant increase in unintentional neglect cases as owners faced financial distress. Horses coming into the program have had an increased need for dental care due to the owners inability to provide it financially for several previous years. In addition to an increase in horses needing basic dental care or teeth floating (a routine procedure for horses where teeth are filed down for an even grinding surface when chewing food), more horses were also seen with serious dental issues that required care above routine teeth floating
(i.e. broken teeth, retained baby caps/teeth, abscessed teeth). These costs increased for USERL and, along with the increased need for the program, doubled the veterinary expenses of the program. This grant will help offset those increased costs for horses in the program and help enable USERL to continue with the current program size. For the past three years the program has, on average, accepted over 200 horses annually into the program for rehabilitation. Once rehabilitated nutritionally, medically and evaluated for training - they are put up for adoption into a new, loving home.
“USERL is excited for the assistance this grant offers to the horses in the communities it serves,” stated Jennifer Hack, Executive Director and Board Member of USERL. “The dental needs of neglected horses the past few years have increased sharply. This generous grant will help offset those costs and meet the increased needs of the horses in the program.”
