Neglected Mare & Foal

November 17, 2011:
A mare and foal were surrendered to Virginia Beach Animal Control when a welfare check revealed an emaciated mare and a foal with an injured, infected leg.
The owner has been charged with 2 counts of animal cruelty, and has surrendered additional animals to other farms.
The mare, Kira, is 300-400 lbs. underweight. The foal is also very underweight and has a severe leg injury where the wound goes to the bone. Treatments thus far with medical care and a cast are showing very promising results and it is hopeful that Cassidy will make a full recovery. The cast is removed and re-applied every 7-10 days.
Both Kira and Cassidy have a long road to recovery. Kira is still nursing her foal which can make weight gain slower. However, in the best interest of both, weaning will be postponed until both are stronger.
Veterinary expenses are higher than usual for these two, compared to the typical new arrival in our program, due to the severity of Cassidy's wound and need for diligent follow-up veterinary care. If you would like to sponsor funds for Kira and Cassidy to help them win this second chance at life, you can make a tax deductible donation online via Paypal below, or you can mail a donation to:

December 21, 2011:
Baby Cassidy continues to recover well! Affected area of his leg is a nice flat pink bed of granulation tissue. He has graduated to 1/2 a cast applied as a split. If this goes well he will move along to regular bandages. Momma Kira is gaining weight but slowly. We will be beginning weaning Cassidy soon to help her. We have waited for emotional stress reasons on the both of them, hoping to aid in Cassidy's recovery.
Thanks to all that donated for them! Donations for their continued care are still welcome as they both have a long road ahead - but Cassidy's future is much brighter now thanks to wonderful supporters, volunteers, the veterinary team and foster!
