After a lengthy investigation and all educational attempts failed, on Monday; May 14, 2007 a Lenoir County man surrendered his 3 horses to USERL to avoid possible animal cruelty charges. An investigator from this region had been assisting Lenoir County Animal Control in an attempt to educate the owner to improve the lives of these horses. Conditions continued to deteriorate despite all efforts of USERL and the county. On Friday, May 11, 2007 during a follow up visit, it was discovered that 2 of the horses were without water in 85 degree weather and conditions had worsened since the last visit. Animal Control kept a watchful eye on the horses supplying food and water throughout the weekend. A decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of these horses; they had to be removed from this property. The owner willingly surrendered all 3 horses to avoid possible prosecution. |
