Neglect report at children's camp

camp(February 24, 2007) - Earlier in February, USERL received a neglect report on a children's camp. An Investigator for USERL found several thin horses, with the majority being in good condition. The owner and caretaker had been working with a vet to improve their health already, but their limited budget made it difficult to give the care needed to the donated, aged horses. They agreed to surrender this 25+ year gelding to USERL to reduce their burden. Although he has the disposition they need for children, his diet needs are difficult for them to handle. USERL investigators are working with the camp to set up a more responsible horse program where possible horse donations are screened and evaluated to determine if the horse is suitable for their needs before they accept into their program. The other horses will continue to be monitored.
